As mentioned previously I am an advocate of the quick (20-30 minutes) nightly clean up and organization. I find that it helps me to prepare, especially the night before a big day. Doing a little every day is just as effective and less stressful than doing a big clean up, de-clutter or organize. In addition to packing my lunch and work bag, I try to do following each night:
- Load/unload the dishwasher. I like to make sure all of the dirty dishes have been loaded and/or all the clean ones are put away.
- Open & sort the mail. Mail piles up quickly, so I separate out what needs to be paid or filed. Everything else either goes into the shred basket or recycling bin.
- Hang up coats other clothes and put away shoes. This will prevent those panicked searches in the morning when you are trying to leave on time.
- Clean up any books, magazines, or toys that are scattered over the living/family room or other areas. It doesn’t have to be perfect, you can just throw stuff into a basket so it is not in your way the next day. It also keeps everything in a central place for later when you have more time to properly put everything away.
Doing a few little things each night helps me to wind down and feel more relaxed because I know I will not have as much waiting for me when I wake up the next day. Plus, it makes my true cleaning days go much faster since I have been organizing all week long.
Do you have any nightly rituals that keep you organized?
